The Spy Who Saved Halloween
Maya was the best spy in her whole third-grade class. She wore her lucky orange cape everywhere, ready for any adventure.
One October afternoon, Maya decided to spy on the old Miller farm. Every Halloween, strange lights flickered behind the barn. What was going on?
She crept through the tall grass, her spy notebook ready. Suddenly, she heard something.
"Moo?"
Maya peeked around the corner and gasped. A giant bull stood there, but this bull was different. Its fur looked like patchy old quilt pieces, and one eye was closed like it was sleeping.
A zombie bull!
But wait — the zombie bull was crying.
"I'm not scary," the bull sniffled. "I'm just lonely. Nobody wants a zombie bull at Halloween."
Maya's heart melted. She stepped out from behind the hay bale.
"I'm Maya, and I'm a spy," she said bravely. "Why are you sad?"
The bull's name was Barnaby. He explained that he became a zombie bull after eating magical glowing spinach from the old witch's garden. Now kids ran away instead of visiting him.
"That's not fair," Maya said. "Everyone deserves a friend."
She had an idea. The magical orange spinach patch grew nearby. Maya picked some bright orange leaves.
"Eat this!" she said.
Barnaby ate the spinach and something amazing happened. His patchy fur became smooth and shiny. His sleepy eye opened wide and bright. He wasn't a zombie bull anymore — he was a magnificent, glowing friend!
That Halloween, Maya and Barnaby gave rides to all the children. Barnaby became the most popular attraction in town, and Maya learned that being a spy isn't just about discovering secrets — it's about discovering friends.
Sometimes the scariest things just need a little love... and some magical spinach.
