The Spy Who Saved Halloween

Lily adjusted her sparkly purple sunglasses and peeked around the corner. She was on a very important mission. In her backyard fort, she was the greatest **spy** in the whole world — at least, that's what her badge said, made from glitter and construction paper.

On this chilly October afternoon, strange sounds were coming from Old Man Peterson's garden. Groans. Moans. And something dragging through the leaves.

Lily's heart thumped like a drum. She crept closer, stepping as softly as a cat. What she saw made her gasp!

A green-faced creature was stumbling between the pumpkin patches, arms stretched out stiffly. Its clothes were ragged and its eyes looked foggy and confused.

"A **zombie**!" Lily whispered, ducking behind a bush. She had read about them in scary stories. But wait — this zombie didn't look hungry for brains. It looked... tired?

"I can't... reach... my tomatoes," the zombie groaned sadly.

Lily stood up slowly. "You can talk?"

The creature jumped. "Oh! A human! I'm not a zombie, not really. I'm just Mr. Peterson's brother, Arthur. I haven't slept in three days because I've been trying to finish his harvest before winter comes."

Lily noticed something shiny in Arthur's hand. A bottle.

"What's that?"

Arthur sighed. "My daily **vitamin**. The doctor says I need them to stay strong. But I've been too busy to remember to take them. Now I'm so weak, I can barely walk straight. No wonder I scared you!"

Lily giggled. "You do look pretty spooky! But I know how to help."

She ran to her kitchen and came back with a glass of water. Arthur took his vitamin and drank it all down.

Within minutes, color returned to his cheeks. He stood up straight and smiled. "Why, I feel wonderful! Thank you, little spy."

"Anytime," Lily beamed, adjusting her glittery badge. "That's what spies do — we solve mysteries AND help people!"

That Halloween, Arthur handed out the biggest, juiciest tomatoes to all the trick-or-treaters. And Lily learned that sometimes, the scariest monsters are just people who forgot to take care of themselves — and a little kindness is the strongest magic of all.
