The Spy Who Loved Zombies

zombiespinachspy

Lily was a spy. At least, she pretended to be every Saturday afternoon. With her magnifying glass around her neck and her notebook in hand, she sneaked through her backyard looking for mysteries.

That day, she found something strange behind the garden shed. A creature! Green skin, messy hair, walking funny. It looked just like a zombie from her big brother's comic books!

Lily hid behind the spinach patch and watched. The zombie shuffled closer and closer. Her heart thumped like a drum. But then, the creature did something surprising. It reached down and picked a handful of fresh spinach leaves.

"Mmm," said the zombie, crunching happily. "Delicious!"

Lily stepped out from her hiding spot. "You're not a real zombie, are you?"

The creature jumped. "Oh! You found me!" It was just a boy her age, wearing green face paint and old clothes. "I'm Oliver. I was playing zombie in my backyard, but I got hungry. Your spinach looked so good."

"I'm Lily," she said. "I was playing spy."

Oliver laughed. "A spy and a zombie! What a team!"

They sat together in the garden, eating spinach leaves and talking. Oliver had just moved in next door and didn't have any friends yet. Lily had been looking for a mystery, but she found something better - a friend.

"Want to play spy and zombie together?" Oliver asked. "You can spy on me while I zombie-walk!"

"Yes!" Lily said. "But first, let's make spinach wraps for a snack."

As they walked to the kitchen, Lily smiled. Being a spy was fun, but having a friend was the best adventure of all. Sometimes the things that seem scary at first are just waiting to become friends.
