The Spy Who Loved Stars

Lily was a spy—but not the kind who wore dark suits and carried secret messages. She was a cloud spy, and her job was to watch the sky from her bedroom window.

Every evening, she'd perch on her windowsill with her silver telescope, searching for shapes in the clouds. But tonight was special. The Great Star Festival happened only once every hundred years, and all the magical creatures were coming to celebrate.

Suddenly, something caught her eye. A magnificent bull with fur the color of spun sugar and horns that glowed like moonbeams was trotting across a cloud. But he looked confused. He kept stopping and shaking his head.

Lily grabbed her special cable—a golden rope her grandmother had given her, said to be made from actual moonlight. "I can help!" she whispered.

The bull had come to take part in the Star Festival, but he'd forgotten his way. The magical cable could guide lost creatures home when tied to something they loved.

"What do you love most?" Lily called out, leaning out her window.

The bull's eyes sparkled. "The sound of children laughing," he replied in a voice like gentle thunder. "That's why I come to the Star Festival. I carry children on my back through the Milky Way so they can wish upon falling stars."

Lily smiled. She tied one end of her golden cable to her bedpost and the other to the bull's glowing horn. "Follow the laughter!" she said.

Suddenly, the cable hummed with warmth. It pulled the bull toward the park where children were playing, their giggles floating upward like bubbles. The bull's fur shimmered with joy as he followed the sound, and soon he was joined by other magical creatures—star-turtles with crystal shells, moon-rabbits with silver fur, and sun-dragons with scales like amber.

From her window, the little cloud spy watched them dance across the night sky, carrying wishes on starlight. And whenever she looked up afterward, she'd see the bull galloping through the clouds, his golden cable trailing behind him like a comet's tail, always ready to guide lost friends home.

That night, Lily made her own wish upon a falling star: that every lost creature would find someone kind to help them find their way.

The star twinkled three times, as if to say: "Granted."
