The Spy Who Learned to Float

Lena's plan was flawless: join the swim team, infiltrate the popular squad, and finally stop sitting alone at lunch. The spy mission had been three weeks in the making, ever since she'd caught Maya—the queen of the junior class—scrolling through Lena's art Instagram at practice. That had to mean something, right?

But somewhere between the hair dye disaster (green, not blue, because her mom had bought the wrong box) and the realization that competitive swimming required actual athletic ability, Lena's master plan was sinking fast.

"New girl," Coach Miller barked, "you're up for the 200 freestyle. Don't drown."

The pool water swallowed her. Six laps in, her arms screamed, and her newly green hair plastered against her forehead like a sad seaweed crown. But then she saw them—the rest of the team gathered at the edge, not laughing, but actually cheering.

She touched the wall, gasping, and Maya held out a hand. "Not bad for your first meet. That hair color is kinda sick, actually."

Lena sat up, dizzy and overwhelmed. But it was what happened next that changed everything. Someone's health drink—some disgusting spinach smoothie meant for pre-race energy—had spilled across the pool deck. Without thinking, Lena wiped her hand on her thigh, leaving a green streak across her championship t-shirt.

Maya burst out laughing. "Okay, that's legendary. Spinach warrior."

The rest of the team cracked up, and for the first time all year, Lena wasn't spying from the outside. She was part of the joke. She was part of the team.

"Smoothies after practice?" Maya asked. "My treat. No spinach involved."

Lena smiled, her chest aching in the best way. Her mission had failed completely, but somehow, she'd still won. Sometimes the best spies don't infiltrate—they just learn to float.
