The Spy Who Found a Friend

Lily was the best spy in her whole school. She could sneak downstairs without making a sound, peek around corners without being seen, and discover secrets nobody else knew. Every night, she would put on her spy glasses (her dad's old sunglasses) and creep to her window to watch the mysterious garden next door.

The garden was overgrown with tangled vines and twinkling fireflies. But the strangest thing was what Lily saw one full moon night—a lumpy green figure shuffling between the pumpkin patches! It moved slowly, arms stretched forward, making soft groaning sounds.

"A zombie!" Lily gasped, her heart beating fast. She had seen zombies in her big brother's video games, and they were always scary and mean. But something about this zombie seemed different.

The next day, Lily returned to spy on the garden. This time, she brought her orange from lunch—her very favorite fruit. She watched as the green zombie carefully picked up fallen baby birds and placed them back in their nests. It watered drooping flowers with its own watering can and gently straightened bent stems.

"That zombie is... gardening?" Lily whispered.

Suddenly, the zombie spotted her! Lily froze, but instead of chasing her, the zombie waved shyly. Lily noticed it was holding something—a beautiful orange pumpkin that glowed like tiny stars.

"H-hello," the zombie said softly. "I'm Zane. I'm not scary. I just look this way because I was once a regular gardener, but a magical spell went wrong. Now I can only come out at night."

Lily stepped closer. "I'm Lily, and I'm a spy!" She held out her orange. "Would you like this? It's my favorite."

Zane's eyes lit up. Nobody had ever offered him anything before. "I haven't had an orange in years!"

From that night on, Lily visited Zane every evening. She learned that Zane was the kindest, gentlest friend anyone could have. He told wonderful stories about the magical creatures who lived in the garden—fairies who painted flowers, talking rabbits who held tea parties, and fireflies who could sing.

Lily learned something important that summer: things that seem scary might just be lonely friends waiting for someone brave enough to say hello. And sometimes, the best discoveries aren't secrets at all—they're friendships.

Every year on Halloween, Lily still dresses as a spy, but now she carries a bright orange pumpkin instead of a magnifying glass. Because that's what real spies do: they find the magic that others miss.
