The Spy Who Couldn't Bear It

Maya pulled her bucket hat down lower, praying her crush Jake wouldn't notice the fresh massacre that was yesterday's DIY bangs. The hat stayed glued to her head all week like a security blanket.

"You look like you're stalking someone," her best friend Chen teased as they sat on Maya's front porch.

"I'm NOT stalking," Maya whispered, though she'd absolutely been spying on Jake's Instagram stories at 2 AM. "I'm just... observing."

Her neighbor's cat — a judgmental orange tabby named Pickles — hopped onto the railing and stared at her with what felt like pure sass.

"Even Pickles knows you're down bad," Chen snorted.

Then everything went sideways. Jake actually noticed her. In the cafeteria. While wearing the hat.

"Nice hat," he said, and Maya died inside because it came out sounding genuine, not sarcastic.

"Thanks," she squeaked.

"You're Maya, right? I saw your art account. Your sketches are sick."

Maya's brain short-circuited. Jake had noticed her ART? Not her hat disasters or her middle school phase where she'd worn the same oversized sweatshirt for three years straight?

But then came the real test: the football game. Her mom was making her go because "socialization" and "freshman experiences" or whatever other mom-logic reasons existed.

"You have to bear with me," Maya's mom said, using the phrase she ALWAYS used when dragging Maya to things.

The stadium lights blazed. Someone's hat flew off during a touchdown. The school mascot (a BEAR, obviously) danced awkwardly near the cheerleaders.

And there was Jake. Sitting two rows down. Without thinking, Maya accidentally-on-purpose positioned herself where he could see her. NOT spying. Just strategic positioning.

Pickles the cat somehow wandered onto the football field because of course this neighborhood cat had zero boundaries. The whole game stopped. The mascot bear tried to catch Pickles. Chaos erupted.

Maya laughed so hard she snorted. Jake turned around, saw her laughing, and smiled.

"That cat is a total legend," he said.

"That's my neighbor's cat," Maya managed. "He's basically the real spy here. Knows everyone's business."

Jake laughed. For real.

"Sit with us?" he motioned to the empty spot beside him.

Maya's hat slid back slightly as she grinned. Maybe this freshman year thing wouldn't be completely terrible after all.
