The Spy Who Caught Feelings

spypalmbull

Maya's palms were sweating. Again. She wiped them on her ripped jeans—nervous habit, much?

"You're literally the worst spy ever," Jordan whispered, grinning. "Zara's looking right at us."

They were technically "studying" in the library, but actually spying on Zara's squad from behind a fortress of AP Chem textbooks. Zara, the junior class president, straight-A goddess, and the girl Maya had been crushing on hardcore since homecoming.

"I'm not spying," Maya protested. "I'm observing. There's a difference."

"You're definitely spying." Jordan checked her phone. "Dude, Zara just posted. She's at the fair. Mechanical bull rides at 7."

Maya's stomach did that flippy thing it always did when Zara's name came up. "So?"

"So?" Jordan raised an eyebrow. "So we're going. And you're finally gonna talk to her instead of just watching from afar like a total creeper."

The fair buzzed with Friday-night energy—carnival lights, couples sharing cotton candy, the distant screams from the Tilt-a-Whirl. And there, by the mechanical bull, was Zara. Laughing. Her hair windblown. Perfect.

Maya's palms started sweating again. Great.

"Go," Jordan pushed her.

Zara climbed onto the mechanical bull. The operator cranked it up—gentle at first, then bucking wild. Zara was killing it, grinning, hair everywhere, totally unbothered. But then the bull did this violent sideways jerk, and Zara went flying—

Maya didn't think. She just moved, breaking Zara's fall with her own body. They tumbled into the dirt together, tangled up.

Silence. Then Zara started laughing. Not embarrassed laughing—real laughing.

"You literally just saved me," Zara said, breathless. "That was... actually pretty heroic."

"I was just in the right place," Maya mumbled, sitting up. Her heart was hammering.

Zara extended her hand—palm open, waiting. Maya took it, and Zara pulled her up, their fingers brushing.

"I'm Zara."

"Maya."

"I know," Zara said, grinning. "I've seen you around. You're in my chem class. You always sit in the back."

Maya blinked. "You... noticed me?"

"I notice things," Zara said simply. Then: "You wanna get out of here? This bull is clearly out for revenge."

Maya's palms were still sweating. But for the first time, she didn't wipe them on her jeans.

"Yeah," she said. "Yeah, I do."

Jordan, watching from the distance, gave her a thumbs-up. Maya smiled. Being a spy was overrated anyway. Being seen? That was way better.
