The Spy Who Caught Feelings

Maya's palms were sweating so hard she thought she might drop the iphone she wasn't supposed to be holding.

It started when she found it in the cafeteria—waiting on the floor beside a table where the popular kids sat. Before she could return it, a notification flashed: 'That song from last night 💜' from someone labeled 'Lightning ⚡' in the contacts.

Okay, maybe she was being a spy. But technically, she'd only glanced at the screen before it locked again. And now she couldn't stop thinking about who Lightning was and what happened last night.

She was supposed to be focusing on her crush, Leo, who sat three tables away. But instead she found herself watching the phone's owner—Chloe, the gorgeous volleyball captain—waiting for it to vibrate with clues about her secret connection.

When Chloe finally noticed her phone was gone and started frantically searching the cafeteria, Maya knew she had to return it. But as she approached, a notification lit up the screen again: 'Thanks for last night. You're getting better at guitar 🎸'

The lightning bolt emoji made sense now.

'Looking for this?' Maya asked, handing it over. But then she froze—Chloe had something green stuck in her teeth. Spinach. From lunch? No, from earlier.

'Thank you SO much,' Chloe said, grabbing the phone. 'I was freaking out.'

Maya considered telling her about the spinach. But then she realized: Chloe, the seemingly perfect girl with the mysterious Lightning person in her life, was just a human who ate spinach and got nervous too.

'No problem,' Maya said, deciding to let it slide. 'We've all been there.'

Chloe's expression softened. 'You're actually really nice. I'm Chloe.'

'Maya.'

A moment of understanding passed between them—like lightning illuminating something that had been in shadow. Maybe Maya didn't need to spy on other people's lives to feel less alone. Maybe everyone had their Lightning, their secrets, their spinach-in-teeth moments.

And maybe Leo would notice her someday. But for now, that was okay.
