The Spy Next Door

spyhairbearcable

Maya felt like a total spy, crouched behind her living room curtains as she watched Jayden walk past her house for the third time that day. Her best friend Priya had dared her to find out if he was going to Spring Fling, and Maya was lowkey taking the mission way too seriously.

But there was a bigger problem: her hair was highkey betraying her. After a failed experiment with DIY highlights that turned her hair more "construction zone orange" than "sun-kissed beach waves," she'd been rocking a beanie for three days straight. The hat hair situation was real.

"You gotta bear with me," her hairdresser had said during the emergency fix-it appointment, apparently not understanding that Maya had zero chill left. She'd spent two hours in that salon chair, scrolling through her phone and trying not to cry.

The real disaster struck later that night. Maya was finally going to DM Jayden—Priya had literally written out the perfect message—when her internet died. Completely. She stared in horror at her router, then followed the tangled cable from the wall to where her little brother's gaming console had somehow pulled it halfway out.

"BRUH," she yelled, stomping into his room.

Her little brother looked up from his game, eyes wide. "What?"

"You literally broke the cable!" She gestured dramatically at the detached cord. "I had important life stuff happening!"

"My bad," he said, though he was clearly fighting back laughter. "Your hair looks kinda cool though. Like, edgy."

Maya paused. Her reflection in his mirror showed the half-fixed, half-orange waves spilling everywhere. It wasn't great. But somehow, in that moment, she realized she'd been stressing over something that didn't actually matter.

She grabbed her phone, used her data plan, and sent Jayden a totally normal message: "Hey, seen you walking past a lot. Everything good?" No spying. No games. Just Maya, questionable hair and all.

He replied five minutes later. "Yeah! Just walking to clear my head. You're the girl with the cool orange hair, right?"

Maya smiled. Sometimes the best missions weren't missions at all.
