The Spy Next Door
Lily pressed her eye to the telescope, just like a real spy. She wore her special spy hat pulled low over her messy brown hair, and she carried her spy notebook everywhere. Today, she was on a very important mission.
For three days, Lily had been watching the house next door. The old woman who lived there moved slowly, very slowly. Her gray hair stuck out in every direction, wild and tangled. She wore the same purple dress every day, and she never smiled.
"She must be a zombie," Lily whispered to her best friend Marco. "That's why she moves so slow!"
Marco nodded his eyes wide. "My grandma says zombies eat brains!"
Lily drew a picture in her spy notebook. This was serious business. But then, something magical happened.
The old woman dropped her grocery bag. Oranges rolled across the sidewalk like tiny orange suns. Lily didn't think—she just ran. Marco came too. Together, they gathered all the oranges and carried them to the woman's door.
"Thank you," the woman said, and her voice sounded like wind chimes. "Would you like to see my garden?"
Lily and Marco looked at each other. A spy never refuses a mission!
The backyard was magical. Flowers glowed softly. Butterflies with rainbow wings fluttered everywhere. And the old woman's wild hair—when she smiled, it began to move, reaching toward the flowers like gentle fingers.
"I'm not a zombie," she laughed. "I'm Gardenia, guardian of the magical plants. My hair helps me talk to them!"
She showed them how her wiggly hair made sunflowers turn their heads and roses bloom extra bright. Lily and Marco spent the afternoon learning garden magic. Gardenia gave them each a glowing seed to plant.
"A spy's job," Lily wrote in her notebook that night, "is to discover the truth. And sometimes the truth is better than you imagined."
From then on, Lily was still a spy. But now she spied for magic, kindness, and new friends. And she learned that the most interesting discoveries come from keeping your eyes, your mind, and your heart wide open.
