The Spy in the Snapback

Maya had perfected the art of being invisible. At Jefferson High, she moved through the halls like a ghost, observing everything, participating in nothing. She called it being strategic. Her friends called it being a total wimp.

"You're literally a spy," Kalia told her at lunch one day. "You know who's dating who, who's fighting, all the tea. But you never actually live any of it."

Maya shrugged. "Observation is safer than participation."

Everything changed when Jake Rivera invited her to his pool party. THE Jake Rivera, who sat at the top of the social pyramid like he was born there. Maya's stomach did something complicated and terrifying.

She spent three hours getting ready, trying on every shirt she owned twice. She settled on her favorite vintage band tee and grabbed her brother's snapback to hide her inevitable bad hair day. The hat sat low on her forehead, her own personal shield.

When she arrived, the party was already in full swing. Jake's backyard was a sea of perfect people, palm trees swaying overhead like they were mocking her anxiety. Maya stood near the snack table, clutching a red solo cup like it was a lifeline.

That's when she saw Max—Jake's golden retriever, sitting alone near the fence, looking as out of place as she felt. His fur was matted from pool water, and he was watching the party with what Maya swore was pure judgement.

She crept over and sat beside him. "Rough crowd, huh?"

Max thumped his tail once, then rested his head on her knee like they'd been best friends for years.

"Maya!" Jake appeared, dripping wet and grinning. "I see you met Max. He's the real VIP here."

Maya froze. But Jake didn't look at her like she was weird. He looked like he was actually glad she'd come.

"Everyone's playing truth or dare," he said. "Wanna join?"

Maya looked at Max, who nudged her hand with his wet nose. Something in her chest loosened.

"Sure," she said, pushing her hat back. "Why not."

Later, when Kalia texted asking how it went, Maya replied: Observation phase complete. Operation: Actually Living—commencing now.
