The Spy in the Snapback

Maya's snapback was her armor. Pull the brim low, vanish into the fabric, become invisible. That was the plan at Jefferson High, where being seen meant being judged.

"You're coming," Chloe declared, dragging Maya toward the padel courts. "Ryan's brother is playing, and guess who's watching?"

The target: Landon, junior varsity star with a smile that made geometry forgettable. Maya's mission: spy from the bleachers, unknown and unseen. Standard protocol.

But then came the vitamin incident.

Mid-match, Landon's phone buzzed. He dug into his bag, and a bottle of supplements clattered out—glucosamine, fish oil, something unpronounceable. The court erupted in laughter.

"What are you, eighty?" someone yelled. "First the knee brace, now the grandpa vitamins?"

Maya expected Landon to brush it off, to be smooth. Instead, his face burned crimson. He mumbled something about his mom making him take them, but the damage was done. The golden boy looked painfully, wonderfully human.

Then came Chase—senior, captain, built like a bear, currently sweating through his jersey as he dominated the court. He high-fived Landon like nothing happened. "Ignore them, bro. My knee's been killing me all week. Those actually work?"

Landon's shoulders dropped. An inch. "Yeah, actually."

"Hook me up, then." Chase fished out a gummy vitamin and popped it like candy. The crowd's laughter dissolved into something else. Approval.

Maya's fingers reached for her hat brim, her default shield. Then stopped.

She watched Landon grin, really grin, as Chase crushed the next serve. Watched the way he moved differently now—less polished, more real. Watched Chloe elbow her, eyes bright with knowing.

"See," Chloe whispered. "He's not perfect."

Maya slid her snapback off. Let her hair catch the sunlight. Let herself be seen, watching Landon watch her back, still blushing but also something else—interested, maybe. Or maybe just ready to be seen, too.
