The Spy in the Slow Lane

I'd mastered the art of being a social spy. Invisible hoodie, corner table, headphones in (even when nothing played). I knew who sat with whom, which couples were fighting, and exactly when the popular kids would abandon their table to vape behind the gym. My best friend Riley called it "low-key creeping." I called it research.

"You should join swim team with me," Riley said, slamming her tray down. "Would it kill you to actually participate?"

I poked at the spinach on my plate. Mom's new health phase meant I was force-feeding myself绿色 stuff daily. "Would it kill you to leave me alone?"

"Freshman year is almost over, Maya. You need a thing."

I didn't need a thing. I had my observations. I'd cataloged every social tier like some anthropologist studying teenage wildlife. But then Riley signed me up anyway, because that's how she rolls.

First practice, I almost died. I was not built for sustained physical effort. But something weird happened—the water felt like a reset button. No spying necessary. Just me, chlorine, and not drowning.

Three weeks in, Coach announced a varsity spot was opening. Everyone'd be watching Friday's time trials. My stomach did things I didn't know stomachs could do.

"You got this," Riley said. Then her face dropped. "Maya... you have something in your—"

I bolted to the bathroom. Yep. Spinach. A full, enormous leaf of spinach wedged between my front teeth. I'd been talking to people for HOURS like this. The popular kids. The cute junior who'd asked about my split times. ALL OF THEM.

I considered faking my death. Instead, I brushed my teeth, hyperventilated, and swam my fastest time ever.

Afterward, Cute Junior found me by my locker. "Hey, you were solid today."

My brain short-circuited. Did he NOT see the spinach? Was he being nice to the spinach girl out of PITY?

"Thanks," I squeaked.

"We're doing a team breakfast at Diana's before regionals. You should come."

I stood there, dripping and confused. The spy had been invited in.

Riley appeared behind him, vibrating with suppressed I-told-you-so energy. "She'll be there."

I'm still weird about spinach. But sometimes the universe hands you exactly what you need, even if it arrives as humiliation first.
