The Spy in the Mirror

zombiehatspywater

Elena had been moving through her days like a zombie for six months—since the layoff, since Marcus left, since she took this corporate espionage job that promised easy money but delivered only sleepless nights. She adjusted the brim of her hat, a nondescript beige thing that made her invisible in crowds, and checked her reflection in the lobby's glass doors. The woman staring back looked hollow.

Her target was on the 42nd floor: some VP who'd allegedly been selling trade secrets to competitors. Elena's job was simple—follow him, document his meetings, retrieve data from his office while he was at lunch. She'd done it a dozen times. But something about tonight felt different. The sky outside was weeping, water streaming down the windows like the city itself was crying for her.

She found his office unlocked. His hat hung on the coat rack—a fedora, ridiculous and affected, like he was playing spy in some cheap film. His computer was already awake. Three clicks and she had what she came for. But then she saw the file on his desktop: a photograph. A woman. Elena.

The realization hit her like cold water. She wasn't the spy here. She was the target. The firm that hired her, the mysterious 'competitors'—they were Marcus's people. This whole operation had been a setup, a way to discredit her, make her look like the criminal instead of the victim.

Her phone buzzed. Security was on its way.

Elena stood at the window, watching the rain lash against the glass. She could run. Could disappear. Become another ghost in another city. But she was so tired of running, tired of being a zombie in someone else's nightmare.

She took off her hat and let it fall to the floor. Let them come.
