The Spy in the Cafeteria Line

Maya's bucket hat became her armor freshman year. Pulling the brim low meant avoiding eye contact, which meant avoiding the interrogation that was high school social warfare. She was running on fumes and anxiety by lunch period, dodging through the crowded hallway like her life depended on it.

Then came the spinach incident.

She'd been sitting with Chloe, who'd declared herself Maya's best friend on day one. Best friend who always sat just close enough to overhear conversations, who asked weirdly specific questions about Maya's crush on Tyler from chem lab.

"You've got—" Chloe gestured at her own teeth, barely suppressing a laugh.

Maya's hand flew to her mouth. A chunk of spinach, big and obvious, from the salad she'd stress-eaten.

"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up," Maya muttered, heading to the bathroom to die of embarrassment.

But the real hit came later. She'd forgotten her phone in English, doubled back to grab it, and there was Chloe in the otherwise empty classroom, typing furiously.

Maya caught the screen before Chloe could minimize it: a group chat called "Tea Spillers 💅" with the caption "omg tyler's gonna die when he hears she still sleeps with a childhood stuffed bear"

Her stomach dropped. Her "friend" had been playing spy all year, collecting intel like Maya's life was content for the group chat.

She walked out. Didn't confront her. Didn't cry. Just grabbed her backpack and kept walking until she hit the track, where she started running.

Ran until her lungs burned, ran until the spinach incident and the betrayal and the whole performed version of herself she'd been curating for months dissolved into rhythm and breath.

That weekend, she donated the hat.

Monday morning, Maya walked into English without it. Head up. She caught Chloe's confused look from across the room and offered a tiny, genuine smile.

Not a friendship smile. An I see you smile.

Some spy games, she realized, you win by refusing to play.
