The Spy in the Bucket Hat

Zara adjusted the brim of her oversized bucket hat, pulling it lower like a security blanket. The vintage cream-colored hat had become her uniform since starting at Westwood High—part camouflage, part statement. Through the gap in the fabric, she conducted her daily reconnaissance: lunchroom surveillance.

From her corner table, Zara was basically a spy. Her phone's camera lens—her weapon of choice—captured everything: the way Tyler's crew chanted "ORANGE ORANGE" whenever someone dropped their lunch tray, the mysterious hierarchy of who sat where, the unspoken rules that governed this high school ecosystem.

Today's mission: document the new papaya slicing technique in the fruit bar for her food blog. Her dad had dropped off exotic fruits that morning, part of his weird health kick. Zara had rolled her eyes but secretly loved trying new things. The papaya was surprisingly good—sweet and musky, nothing like the bland cafeteria food most people settled for.

Her spy work came to a screeching halt when Lucas, the cute junior from her English class, slid into the seat across from her. Zara's phone almost clattered onto the table.

"Nice hat," he said, grinning. "You spying on anyone specific?"

Her face burned. Was she that obvious?

"Just... documenting." She shoved a forkful of spinach into her mouth to avoid answering. A giant leaf stuck right between her front teeth. Of course.

Lucas didn't laugh. Instead, he pulled an orange from his backpack and started peeling it. "I like your blog. The way you write about food makes it feel... I don't know, real? Like it's okay to be into stuff even if it's not what everyone else is doing."

Zara's fingers went to her hat brim. For the first time all year, she wanted to push it back.

"Spinach," Lucas said casually, nodding at her teeth.

She brushed it away, mortified. But he was still smiling.

"So, papaya tomorrow?" he asked. "I heard they're bringing in mangoes too."

Maybe she wasn't just an observer anymore. Maybe that was okay.
