The Spy in the Bleacher Seats

Maya's vidaleta baseball cap pulled low over her eyes, her usual disguise for avoiding conversation in the cafeteria. She wasn't actually antisocial—just selectively social, thank you very much. But today, her spy mission required full stealth mode.

Across the lunch courtyard, Lucas sat with his friends, laughing like he didn't just accidentally heart her Instagram post from three years ago at 2 AM. Maya's palms sweated against her phone screen. She'd been low-key stalking his socials since freshman orientation, which honestly made her feel like a total creep, but whatever. It wasn't like she was cat-fishing him or anything weird.

"Hey, freak show," came the voice behind her. Tyler. The actual worst. "Still playing spy with your little games?"

Maya's face burned. Sometimes Tyler acted like such a complete jerk, she swear he had personal beef with everyone's happiness.

"Whatever, Tyler," Maya muttered, but her voice shook.

"That's what I thought," he smirked, walking away like he owned the school.

Her phone buzzed. A notification from Lucas: *hey, didn't know you were into vintage band merch. saw your post about that 90s group.*

Maya's heart did this embarrassing flutter thing. He'd noticed. Actually noticed.

That afternoon, she found herself at the skate park, where Lucas practiced after school. She sat on the bleachers, pretending to scroll through her phone but totally watching him land trick after trick. His hair flopped in his face when he skated, and okay, she was obsessed.

A calico cat appeared from nowhere, jumping onto the bleacher beside her and demanding attention with demanding meows.

"You're not subtle either, huh?" Maya scratched behind its ears. The cat purred like a tiny motorcycle.

Lucas noticed her. Actually noticed her sitting there.

"Maya?" He skated over, wiping sweat from his forehead. "What's up?"

"Just... hanging," she managed, her palms sweating again. "You're really good."

"Thanks." He grinned, and her stomach did flips. "Want to try?"

"Oh, no, I'd totally embarrass myself."

"Come on," he said, holding out his hand. "I'll teach you."

As she took his hand, Maya's vidaleta cap slipped off, revealing her face completely. For once, she didn't scramble to put it back on. Maybe being seen wasn't so scary after all.

And maybe—just maybe—Lucas had been low-key watching her too.
