The Spy in the Beanie

spinachhairhatspy

Maya pressed herself against the lockers, heart hammering like she'd just finished a 5K. Which she hadn't, obviously. She pulled her navy beanie lower over her frizzy hair—today was definitely a second-day hair situation, and the hat was doing serious damage control.

She was on a mission. Operation: Figure Out Why Jason Was Being Weird.

Jason, who'd sat next to her in bio since freshman year. Jason, who suddenly couldn't make eye contact without looking like he'd swallowed something whole. Jason, who'd definitely been staring at her during lunch yesterday when she'd had that enormous piece of spinach stuck in her teeth.

The humiliation still burned. Maya had caught her reflection in her phone afterward: green leafy debris right in front. She'd literally walked around like that for forty-five minutes. Forty-five. Minutes. The kind of social suicide that fueled nightmares.

But Jason's weirdness had started way before The Great Spinach Incident of 2026.

Maya peeked around the corner. Jason was at his locker, typing something on his phone with intense focus. A sophomore—fresh, easily manipulated—walked by. Jason grabbed his arm, said something, pointed down the hall toward where Maya was hiding.

The kid nodded, pulled something from his backpack, and handed it to Jason.

Maya's stomach did that awful flip thing. Was he talking about her? Was The Spinach Incident still circulating? Did he have screenshots?

She ducked back, pressing her forehead against the cool metal. This was it. Her reputation was over. She'd be known as Spinach Girl until graduation. People would make vegetable puns at her wedding. She'd have to move to a different country and change her name.

"Maya?"

She jumped like three feet. Jason stood there, beanie in hand, messing up his own hair. He looked nervous.

"I, uh, heard you like that band from my hoodie. The one from the fall assembly?" He held out a CD—people still made those? "I got you their limited edition thing. I've been trying to give it to you for like a week."

Maya stared. The CD. The band from his hoodie. The one she'd complimented back in September.

"You were... trying to give me a CD?"

"Yeah?" Jason rubbed the back of his neck, his ears turning pink. "I kept chickening out. I finally sent that freshman to help me figure out your schedule."

Maya's face burned. She'd been spy-testing him for nothing.

"Also," Jason added, "you should know you had spinach in your teeth yesterday. Like, all lunch."

"I KNOW." Maya covered her face with both hands. "Everyone knows. It's my brand now. I'm Spinach Maya."

Jason laughed, and it was the most genuine sound she'd heard from him in months. "Nah. I was gonna tell you, but then I thought it'd be weird to just... stare at your mouth."

They stood there for a second, and the awkwardness suddenly felt different. Better. The kind of weird that might actually lead to something.

"So," Maya said, pulling her hat back into place, "you've been carrying this CD around for a week?"

"Maybe." Jason shrugged, grinning now. "Wanted to make sure it was perfect."

Maya smiled back, and for the first time in forever, she didn't feel like she was watching from the sidelines. She was right here in the game—hat hair, spinach incidents, and all.
