The Spy in the Baseball Cap

Maya pulled her snapback down lower, like that would somehow make her invisible. She was crouched behind the bleachers, feeling ridiculous, while her best friend Chloe hyperventilated beside her.

"You're the BEST spy EVER," Chloe whispered, despite Maya never having spied on anything in her life. "Just go check if Jake's at his locker. I need to know if he hung up the note."

Maya stood up, knees popping, and adjusted her hat like it was some sort of tactical gear instead of a ten-dollar accessory from PacSun. This was what her social life had become: a spy mission for a boy who'd last spoken to Chloe in biology when he borrowed a pencil.

She moved through the hallway like she was running a covert op, which meant walking awkwardly fast while pretending to be deeply interested in her phone. The school felt different after hours—echoey and weird, like something out of a psychological thriller instead of just a Tuesday afternoon.

Then she heard it: a weird mewing sound from behind the gym equipment door.

Maya's spy senses went off the rails. Was it a trapped student? A rival spy from North High? She pushed the door open and came face-to-face with the school's legendary feral cat, aka The Demon, aka Mr. Whiskers according to the custodian. It was tangled in someone's abandoned hoodie, yowling like its entire worldview had been betrayed.

She spent ten minutes freeing the cat, getting cat hair all over her vintage Supreme shirt, emerging victorious but scratched. Mr. Whiskers bolted like he'd just been paid a million dollars.

"DUDE," Chloe hised, grabbing her arm as she limped back. "Did you see Jake?"

"I saved a life," Maya said, holding up her bleeding arm. "Also, no note on the locker. He left early for track."

"OH MY GOD." Chloe looked at the scratches, then her eyes filled with tears. "You're literally the best friend ever. And you look so cool in that hat, like a mysterious vigilante."

Maya smiled despite herself, pulling her snapback off to fix her messy bun. The hallway was empty, the cat was free, and Jake would never know what hit him when Maya "accidentally" mentioned his forgotten note tomorrow.

Some days, you were just a girl with a cat-scratched arm and a best friend who made spy missions feel like saving the world. And honestly? That was enough.
