The Spy in My Pocket
Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Instead, it looked like a banana had exploded on her head.
"It's not that bad," Chloe lied, barely looking up from her iPhone.
Maya caught her own reflection in the darkened window. It was definitely that bad. Her mom had spent two hundred dollars on this disaster. The worst part? Julian's party was in three hours.
Chloe scrolled through Instagram Stories. "Oh look. Hailey's getting ready for Julian's too."
Maya shouldn't look. Really shouldn't. But she leaned over Chloe's shoulder anyway, becoming exactly what she'd sworn she wouldn't: a spy in her own social circle, haunting the edges of Hailey's perfect life through stolen glances and screenshots.
Hailey's hair was perfect, of course. Beach waves that looked effortless even though everyone knew she'd spent two hours with a curling iron. Her caption read: *casual prep for julian's ✨*
"How does she always make everything look so easy?" Maya muttered.
"She doesn't," Chloe said finally, pockets her phone. "She just posts the highlight reel. You're watching her movie and comparing it to your behind-the-scenes footage."
Maya stared at her neon reflection. Banana explosion or not, it was hers.
"You know what?" Maya stood up. "Forget Julian's party."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Let's go to the boardwalk instead. I'm running on impulse tonight."
They ended up at the beach, eating overpriced soft serve and watching the sunset turn the ocean pink-gold. Maya's hair caught the light, and you know what? The accidental highlights almost glowed.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Hailey's story again: *where is everyone??? party's dead without u guys*
Maya almost opened it. Almost slid back into that spy-mode of obsessing over someone else's life instead of living her own. Instead, she handed her iPhone to Chloe.
"Take a picture of us. The real version."
That photo became her lock screen: two girls with ice-cream smiles, hair that wasn't perfect but was definitely theirs, caught in a moment that didn't need any filters.
