The Spy in My Palm

My palms were sweating so bad I could practically water plants with them. Junior year, and I was still the girl who melted into her locker whenever Chad Miller walked past. Pathetic.

Then I discovered the ultimate hack: cat-fishing as @mysterious_vibes on TikTok. Not like, predatory cat-fishing — more like, spy-on-everyone's-real-thoughts cat-fishing. I posted cryptic videos with my face cropped out, and suddenly people who'd never looked at me twice were pouring their hearts out in my DMs.

Including Chad.

"Nobody gets me," he typed at 2 AM. "Everyone thinks I'm this confident bull of a lacrosse bro, but I'm actually terrified of failing."

I almost dropped my phone. The Chad Miller? The same guy who made me feel invisible? The universe had a twisted sense of humor.

We started talking. Every night. Me as @mysterious_vibes, him thinking he was pouring his heart out to some random aesthetic account. I learned he loved indie rock, secretly watched Gilmore Girls, and had a cat named Pickles who hated everyone except him.

Then came the bomb: "There's this girl in my history class. She's super quiet but I catch her looking at me sometimes and I swear my heart does this running-into-walls thing. But I'm too chickenshit to talk to her."

My breath caught. He meant ME. The real me, not the mysterious-vibes version.

But now I was trapped. If I revealed myself as the mysterious account he'd been confiding in, would he feel betrayed? Like I'd been spy-ing on his vulnerabilities? Or would he see it as fate?

The next day at school, I found him by my locker. His palms were sweating too.

"Hey," he said, scratching the back of his neck. "So, Pickles the cat finally let me sleep last night, and I was thinking..."

My jaw dropped. He knew. He'd figured it out.

"Your indie rock obsession," I whispered. "And the Gilmore Girls thing."

"And your account," he grinned, holding up his phone with @mysterious_vibes pulled up. "Pickles has excellent taste in anonymous girls who turn out to be way cooler than they think."

Sometimes the best stories aren't about becoming someone else. They're about realizing the version of you that's been hiding all along? That version was exactly who someone was waiting for.
