The Spy Behind the Fence
Maya's hair refused to cooperate that morning, frizzing up like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Perfect for her first day at the country club where everyone looked like they stepped out of a Instagram post. Lowkey embarrassing.
She found herself running late—literally running—past the padel courts toward the locker rooms when she saw him: Lucas, the guy she'd been crushing on all summer, playing padel with his friends. His hair was perfect, obviously.
But what caught her eye was the bull.
Not a metaphorical bull—like, someone bullying people. An actual bull. A small one, maybe a calf, wandering behind the chain-link fence that separated the courts from the neighboring farm. It was just standing there, watching the padel game like it understood the rules.
Maya stopped running. She felt like a spy now, observing this secret moment that nobody else noticed. The players were too focused on their game, too busy serving and vibing, to see the bull watching them with what looked like mild judgment.
"Hey!" Maya called out before she could stop herself. "There's a bull over there!"
Lucas turned, confused. His friends laughed. "What?"
She pointed. The bull had moved closer to the fence, now directly behind where Lucas was standing. The animal lowered its head like it was about to—
"BULL!" Maya screamed, now running toward them.
The bull snorted and charged the fence just as Lucas jumped forward, startled. The chain links rattled violently but held. The bull shook its head and wandered off, apparently done with its entertainment.
Everyone stared at Maya. Her hair was still a disaster. She was out of breath. She'd just caused a scene.
"That was iconic," Lucas said, grinning at her. "You literally saved me from getting demolished by a bull. You're, like, my hero now."
Maya's face burned, but not from embarrassment anymore. Sometimes being the weird one who notices things—that's not so bad. Even with bad hair days.
