The Spy at the Deep End

Maya's cat, Mittens, gave her that judgmental look as she slathered on SPF 50. Great, even the family pet knew she was spiraling. Three group chat messages from Jordan: "you coming???" "pool party starts at 3" "everyone's here lol"

Maya hated pool parties. Hated them. But junior year was about bravery, right? About becoming who you were supposed to be? About finally talking to people instead of just observing from the edges like a total weirdo?

She grabbed her towel. "Wish me luck, Mittens."

The cat blinked slowly.

Jordan's house was already chaos. TikTok blasted from waterproof speakers, half the sophomore class was in various states of undress, and someone definitely spiked the punch with something stronger than fruit juice. Maya stood by the fence, clutching her towel like a lifeline.

"Maya! Finally!" Jordan materialized, pushing wet hair from her face. "You're missing it. Tyler's doing cannonballs off the roof."

"Sounds... thrilling?" Why was she so awkward? Why couldn't she just be normal?

"You okay?" Jordan's face softened. "You know you don't have to swim, right. We just wanted you here."

Something tightened in Maya's chest. Because the truth was, she'd been kind of spying on their group chats for months. Watching from the sidelines as friendships formed, inside jokes emerged, people paired off for summer situationships. She knew everything about them, and they knew nothing about her.

Water splashed everywhere as someone bellyflopped. The yard tilted slightly, hot and overwhelming.

"I'm not good at this," Maya admitted. "The being a person thing."

Jordan laughed. "Girl, NONE of us are good at this. Have you met Tyler? Have you met literally anyone here? We're all just pretending."

She scanned the party. The popular kids looked awkward. The quiet ones were shouting. Nobody had it figured out. They were all just flailing, trying not to drown in expectations and hormones and the terrifying pressure of becoming adults.

"Come on." Jordan grabbed her hand. "Let's sit on the edge. At least dip your feet in."

Maya kicked off her flip-flops. The water was cool against her skin, shocking her into the present moment. Maybe that was enough for now. Just dipping her toes in. Not swimming. Not diving. Just... participating. A little.

"So," Jordan said, splashing her gently. "Tell me everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. I feel like there's a whole Maya universe I've been sleeping on."

Maya smiled. Maybe she didn't have to be a spy anymore. Maybe she could just exist. "Deal. But you have to tell me about you and Tyler first. Don't think I didn't notice that hand-holding situation earlier."

Jordan's face flushed the exact color of the sunset."Okay, SPY. But you're getting in the pool first."

Maya stood up, took a deep breath, and jumped.
