The Spy at the Deep End

Marcus adjusted his cheap sunglasses, feeling like the world's worst undercover agent. For three hours, he'd been conducting surveillance on Jessica Martinez from behind the concessions stand at Tyler's pool party. Technically, he was just being a creepy lurker, but his brain spun it into something cooler—Operation: Get Noticed. He was seventeen, and this was his tactical approach to social life.

His iPhone buzzed in his pocket—his mom wanting him home. Typical. Marcus checked his reflection in the black screen, practicing his casual lean against the snack table. Smooth. Definitely not suspicious.

Then Jessica walked over, and Marcus's heart went into overdrive. She reached for an orange slice from the fruit platter. She was actually close enough to touch. He opened his mouth to say something—anything cool—but his brain supplied absolutely zero words.

"Hey, Marcus," she said, and his knees nearly buckled. "You've got..." She gestured to her own teeth.

Oh god. The spinach. The hummus plate. The stuff from forty minutes ago that his best friend Ryan swore wasn't visible.

His face burned hotter than the July sun. This was it. The social assassination of Marcus Chen, complete and total. He scrambled toward the pool, desperate to escape, when Tyler called out: "CANNONBALL CONTEST! Marcus versus Jessica!"

Before he could process it, Jessica grabbed his hand. "Come on, Spy. Let's see what you've got."

They jumped together. The water swallowed everything—the embarrassment, the overthinking, the strategic calculations. When they surfaced, gasping and laughing, Jessica pushed wet hair from her face. "You know," she said, splashing him, "I've seen you watching me all summer. I was waiting for you to actually say hello."

Marcus froze. So she'd noticed.

"Next time," she added with a grin, "skip the covert ops. I like direct approaches." She swam toward the shallow end, leaving Marcus treading water in the deep end, grinning like an idiot.

Operation: Get Noticed had technically failed. But somehow, he'd won anyway.
