The Spy and the Soft Zombie
Lily pressed her eye against the cardboard spy telescope she'd made from a paper towel roll. She was on a Very Important Mission: to discover what was making the scratchy-scratchy sounds in the attic at midnight.
Her fluffy orange cat, Marmalade, padded silently beside her. Marmalade wasn't just a cat — he was her trusted spy partner, complete with a tiny handmade detective badge safety-pinned to his collar. Together, they were the best spy team in the whole neighborhood.
The attic door creaked as Lily pushed it open. Moonlight spilled through the round window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. And there, beside an old trunk, sat the most unexpected thing Lily had ever seen.
It was a zombie. But not a scary one.
This zombie had bright green stitching, rainbow-colored hair made of yarn, and the biggest, saddest button eyes Lily had ever seen. It was clutching a small heart-shaped pillow.
"Boo?" the zombie whispered, and its voice sounded like wind chimes.
Marmalade approached cautiously, then rubbed his cheek against the zombie's leg. The zombie's mouth curved into what might have been a smile.
"I'm not scary," the zombie explained softly. "I'm a ZOMBIE — that stands for 'Zany Origami Monster Being Incredibly Yummy'... well, except I'm not yummy. I'm soft. I was made for a little girl's birthday, but I fell out of the gift bag on the moving truck next door, and I've been looking for my way back ever since."
Lily's spy mission suddenly made perfect sense. She hadn't been hunting for ghosts or monsters. She'd been hunting for someone who needed help.
"Come with us," Lily said, taking the zombie's hand. It was stuffed with cotton and felt warm, like a hug. "We'll be your spies and help you find your way home."
That night, Lily learned something important: sometimes the things that seem scary at first are just friends we haven't met yet. And the very best spy missions aren't about catching bad guys — they're about making new friends.
Marmalade purred in agreement, and the rainbow-haired zombie smiled, finally home.
