The Splash That Changed Everything
Maya had spent three years of middle school being invisible, which honestly was fine with her. Better invisible than noticed by Jason—the human **bull** who'd made it his mission to torment anyone who dared to exist differently.
Then came the carnival where everything shifted. Maya's **cat** Luna had escaped earlier that day, sending Maya on a frantic neighborhood search that left her sweaty and disheveled. By the time she reached the carnival, she looked like a mess. But sometimes, being a mess is exactly what you need.
"Wanna try?" The carny guy gestured to the **goldfish** booth. "Everyone wins something."
Maya's **dog**, Cooper, tugged at his leash, sensing her hesitation. On impulse, she handed Cooper's leash to her best friend Riley and stepped up to the booth. Three tosses later, she was holding a plastic bag containing a single orange fish swimming in tiny circles.
"I named him Freedom," Maya announced, even though it was the most ridiculous name ever.
"Because he's trapped in a bag?" Riley asked.
"Because I won him," Maya said. "First time I've ever won anything."
The next week, Jason's pool party invitation arrived—probably a prank, but Maya decided to go anyway. She arrived wearing her oldest swimsuit, clutching Freedom's bowl (she refused to leave him home after Luna's escape trauma).
Jason stared. "You brought a **fish** to a pool party?"
"Yeah," Maya said, suddenly finding her voice. "His name's Freedom, and he's better company than you."
The pool went silent. Then someone laughed—not mean laughter, but the kind that bubbles up because something is genuinely funny. Riley started cracking up, and then Maya was laughing too, standing there in her mismatched swimsuit with a goldfish bowl while the **water** in the pool rippled around them.
Jason didn't know what to do. So he just said, "Whatever," and cannonballed into the deep end.
Maya set Freedom on a table and realized something important: being invisible was a choice she'd made. And she was done making it.
She dove into the pool wearing her ugly swimsuit with her fish watching from the sidelines, finally ready to make waves instead of just watching them.
