The Splash That Changed Everything

My iphone had survived ninth grade drama, a drop from the bleachers, and even an unfortunate encounter with a smoothie. But it turns out, the thing that finally killed it was my own awkwardness.

I was at this party — okay,Tyler's party, which I only went to because Maya swore he'd been lowkey flirting with me in chem — standing by the pool with my new two-piece I'd spent thirty minutes psyching myself up to wear. The baseball team was there, fresh off their winning streak, and Tyler was being all charming with his varsity jacket and perfect hair.

I was trying to look casual and unbothered, you know, just scrolling through my phone like I wasn't hyper-aware of every single person around me. Then someone yelled "CANNONBALL!" and instinct took over. I jumped back, my phone slipped from my grip, and I watched in mortified slow motion as it arced through the air and made the tiniest, most pathetic splash imaginable.

Dead silence. Then someone laughed.

But Tyler? Tyler just vaulted into the pool, fully clothed,Varsity jacket and all, and fished it out. His white shirt turned transparent, everyone was losing it, and he was like, "Well, that's one way to make an entrance."

I wanted to evaporate. Actually disappear.

Then later, when I was sitting on the pool edge with my phone in a bowl of rice (because apparently that's actually a thing that works?), he sat beside me and said, "You know, I ate it coming off first base once. Slid right into home with my phone in my back pocket. Cracked the screen AND my dignity."

We talked for two hours about everything —baseball, my fear of swimming in deep water, how much I hate that social media makes everything feel like a performance. His jacket dried into this weird stiff shape. My hair was a frizz ball from the pool air. And somehow, that was the most real conversation I'd had with anyone in months.

My phone never recovered. But weirdly? I think I did.
