The Splash of Friendship
Leo loved his old baseball more than anything. It had scuff marks from a hundred games and smelled like summer evenings. But today, the baseball sat lonely in his room because Leo had just moved to a new town and didn't know anyone.
"I wish I had a friend," Leo whispered, tossing the ball up and catching it. Over and over.
Suddenly, a strange sparkle appeared on the baseball's surface. Leo blinked. Was that... glitter? He ran to the kitchen sink and let droplets of water fall onto the ball.
WHOOSH!
The baseball began to glow blue. It grew squishy like a sponge, then suddenly sprouted tiny arms and legs! A little face popped out of the surface.
"Hello!" squeaked the creature. "I'm Splash! And you must be my new friend!"
Leo's mouth dropped open. "You're... my baseball?"
"I'm a water sprite who was sleeping inside your baseball!" Splash danced around on the counter. "Your tears woke me up. You were wishing so hard for a friend that your magic pulled me out!"
From that day on, Leo was never lonely. Splash could turn into water and slip under doors to explore. They played catch in the backyard—Splash would turn back into a baseball, fly through the air, then splash! become a giggling sprite again. They discovered that Splash could make tiny rainbows appear with just a wave of his watery hands.
But the best magic was what Splash taught Leo: true friendship isn't about having someone exactly like you. It's about finding joy in differences. Splash was made of water and lived in a baseball, while Leo was a boy who loved both baseballs and swimming pools now.
"You're the best friend ever," Leo told Splash one starry night.
"And you're mine," Splash bubbled happily. "Because you believed magic was possible even when you were lonely. That's the strongest magic of all!"
That's how Leo learned that sometimes the most wonderful friendships come from the most unexpected places—even from inside an old baseball that needed just a little water to show its true self.
