The Splash Heard 'Round the Block
Maya leaned against the chain-link fence, heart doing somersaults in her chest. She'd been essentially playing spy for twenty minutes, watching Tyler's pool party from behind the massive oak tree like some total creeper. Not her finest moment, honestly, but when your crush invites everyone to an end-of-summer bash and you're not on the guest list? Desperation makes people do weird things.
Inside the fenced-in yard, the pool glittered like liquid diamonds under the string lights. Kids she'd known since middle school were cannonballing and laughing, totally clueless that Maya was documenting their every move on Instagram like some undercover operative. Pathetic? Maybe. But in her defense, Tyler had smiled at her in chem lab yesterday, and her brain had short-circuited.
Just as she convinced herself to bail—like, what was she even doing?—Maya spotted Brianna, who'd been giving her major stank-eye since seventh grade, dramatically corner Tyler by the deep end. Brianna was being a total bull, charging into conversations where nobody wanted her, practically wielding her social status like a weapon. Maya watched, transfixed, as Brianna flipped her hair and gestured wildly, probably plotting something devious. That girl was such a fox—sly, cunning, always three steps ahead in the game of high school social warfare.
Then came the moment that would live in infamy: Brianna, in the middle of whatever queen-bee speech she was delivering, stepped backward to emphasize her point and caught her heel on a stray pool noodle. Time seemed to slow as she pinwheeled, arms flailing, and went full-on vertical into the deep end.
The splash was magnificent.
Chaos erupted. Someone's cat, which had been sleeping peacefully on a patio chair, bolted at the commotion. Maya watched from her hiding spot, torn between satisfaction and secondhand embarrassment, as Tyler and his friends fished a sputtering, mascara-streaked Brianna from the water.
Her phone buzzed. Tyler: hey where r u? u coming?
Maya stepped out from behind the tree, heart racing. Time to stop playing spy and actually live.
