The Spinach Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily was running through her mother's garden when she spotted something extraordinary. A tiny sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, sat perched on a spinach leaf, watching her with wise amber eyes.
"Greetings, young one," the sphinx purred, its voice like wind chimes. "I am Phinx, guardian of the magical spinach patch. But alas, I have lost my dearest friend."
Lily's eyes widened. "Who's your friend?"
"Zomby," Phinx said sadly. "He's not scary at all, despite what everyone thinks. He's a gentle zombie who loves gardening and tells terrible jokes. He went to find the perfect spot to plant moonflowers and never returned."
Lily remembered her mother's words: never judge someone by how they look. "I'll help you find him!" she declared.
Together, they went running through the garden, past rows of tomatoes and corn. "Zomby!" Phinx called. "Where are you?"
They found him behind the pumpkin patch, carefully watering small silver plants that glowed softly in the twilight. Zomby turned around—his skin was pale green, his stitches were visible, but his smile was warm and kind.
"There you are!" Phinx chirped. "I was so worried!"
"The moonflowers needed extra water," Zomby said bashfully. "Sorry I worried you, little friend."
Lily realized that Zomby wasn't scary at all. He was just someone who loved plants, just like her mother. The three new friends spent the rest of the summer tending the magical garden together, and Lily learned that the best friendships often come from the most unexpected places.
Sometimes, the scariest-looking things turn out to be the most wonderful of all.
