The Spinach Smile Sabotage
Maya transferred to Ridge High three weeks into sophomore year, which everyone knows is basically social suicide. Her mom had dropped her off with a "Make friends, honey!" and a hopeful wave, leaving Maya standing alone in the quad like a lost NPC who'd glitched into the wrong server.
Her designated tour guide, Jordan, seemed genuinely decent. As they grabbed lunch together, Maya noticed him sneakily feeding his leftovers to a scruffy golden dog wandering near the picnic area.
"That's my dog, actually," Jordan said with a shrug. "His name's Nacho."
"Nachos are legit," Maya replied, immediately wanting to die.
But Jordan just laughed. And then came lunch tray number two: the spinach artichoke dip that would change everything.
Maya took a massive bite, savoring what she thought was her moment. She smiled at Jordan, full beam, like she was auditioning for a toothpaste commercial and definitely winning.
Jordan's eyes went wide. Then they sort of... crinkled. His whole face got this expression like he was trying so hard not to laugh that it actually hurt. He swallowed. Cleared his throat. Looked down at his plate like it contained the secrets of the universe.
The silence stretched. And stretched.
Maya ran her tongue across her front teeth. Her heart sank. There it was. The beast. A massive, dark green chunk of spinach lodged between her teeth like she was trying to start a farm in her mouth.
"Spinach," Jordan finally managed, like it was the most normal observation in the world.
"I know," she said. "I can feel it. It's... it's a whole situation."
And then—this was the part that still made her face burn when she thought about it—she just doubled down. She didn't run to the bathroom. Didn't cover her mouth. She sat there, green-toothed and proud, and they finished lunch like nothing had happened. Like she wasn't hosting a vegetable garden in her smile.
Jordan was still her tour guide the rest of the day. And the next day. And the next.
"You know," he said on Friday, "nobody else would've just sat there with spinach in their teeth and finished that conversation. That was kind of iconic, honestly."
Maya smiled. Carefully. Very carefully.
"Thanks," she said. "I think."
Her phone buzzed.
Jordan: Dinner tomorrow? Nacho thinks you're cool.
Maya grinned—this time for real. She checked her reflection in her phone after he walked away. Clear. Safe.
"Whatever," she said. "Iconic."
