The Spinach Smile

Maya stood in front of the bathroom mirror for the twentieth time, checking her teeth. She was seventeen, and tonight was Jordan's legendary New Year's Eve party - the kind that could make or break your social status for the entire semester. She'd spent two hours on her hair, another hour picking the perfect outfit, and now she was about to walk out the door.

"Maya! Dinner's ready!" her mom called from downstairs. "I made that spinach lasagna you love."

She'd eaten two pieces earlier. Now she noticed what she'd missed: a tiny piece of spinach wedged between her front teeth, glaringly obvious against her pale skin. How long had it been there? Had it been there during her presentation in history class? When she'd talked to Caleb in the hallway?

At Jordan's party, the social pyramid was immediately visible. The popular kids clustered around the DJ booth, the athletes controlled the couch area, and everyone else gravitated toward their assigned corners. Maya usually hovered in the middle - not invisible, but definitely not sphinx-like in her mystery and allure.

She spotted Caleb across the room, laughing with his friends. She'd been crushing on him since October, but every conversation they'd had felt awkward and forced. Tonight was supposed to be different. Tonight she was supposed to be confident, funny, cool.

Instead, she spent the first hour obsessively checking her reflection in every mirror, window, and phone screen, terrified that the spinach had returned. The paranoia was exhausting. Why did being a teenager feel like walking through a minefield of potential humiliations?

Then she noticed something: Caleb kept glancing her way. Not in a "there's something weird about that girl" way, but in an actually-interested way. When their eyes met across the room, he actually smiled.

Her heart raced. This was it. He was going to come over. She needed to be ready.

But when he finally approached, he didn't say anything cool or smooth. Instead, he reached out and gently touched her shoulder.

"Hey, you have a little..." He gestured to his own teeth.

Spinach. Again.

Maya's face burned. She turned to flee to the bathroom, but his hand caught her arm.

"No, wait, I didn't mean..." Caleb laughed, this adorable genuine laugh that made his nose crinkle. "I was going to say you have something in your teeth, but honestly? It's kind of endearing. Like, you're the only person here who's actually real."

Maya blinked. "What?"

"Everyone's trying so hard to be cool," he said, gesturing at the room full of carefully curated poses and conversations. "And you're just... yourself. Even with spinach in your teeth."

She stared at him, and then she couldn't help it - she started laughing. Really laughing, for the first time all night. And Caleb laughed with her, and suddenly the social pyramid didn't seem so steep anymore.

"Want to get some fresh air?" he asked. "I think there's a balcony..."

Maya checked her teeth one last time in her phone camera. No spinach this time. But somehow, she didn't care as much as she had before.

"Yes," she said. "I'd love that."
