The Spinach Protocol

iphonecablewaterspinach

The iphone buzzed in my pocket like an angry hornet. Maya's text lit up the screen: "Party at Jordan's. U coming??"

I stared at my charging cable, frayed at the ends like my nerves. Mom's voice echoed from downstairs: "The spinach isn't going to wash itself, Marcus!"

The fridge hummed its judgment as I crammed the party supply bag into my backpack. Organic spinach, check. Phone at 87%, check. Social anxiety? Off the charts.

Jordan's house already pulsed with bass when I arrived. Someone screamed "CAP" and the whole room dissolved into laughter. I ghosted to the kitchen, my spinach sweating inside its plastic prison.

"What's with the salad, bro?" Tyler leaned against the counter, that effortlessly cool grin that made my stomach do backflips. "Your mom pack you a lunch?"

"My cousin's vegan," I lied. "She forgot it."

Smooth, Marcus. So smooth.

Then everything went sideways—literally. My iphone slid from my grip, did a perfect pirouette, and plummeted into the cooler's water with an agonizing splash.

"No no no NO!"

Before I could process the damage, a girl with half-purple hair materialized beside me. "Mid crisis?"

She fished out my phone, water streaming down its screen like digital tears.

"That's... not good."

"Watch this." She shook the device, then grabbed a handful of my spinach. "Organic matter absorbs moisture. My brother's an engineering nerd."

"You're putting leafy greens on my—"

"Trust the process, Marcus."

She knew my name. OF COURSE she knew my name. My face burned hotter than the salsa on the counter.

She pressed the spinach-wrapped phone against her forehead like some weird vegetable ritual. The whole kitchen watched, someone filming, someone else quietly losing it.

Three minutes later, my screen flickered to life.

"IT WORKS!" someone shouted. "SPINACH SAVES THE DAY!"

That's how I became "Spinach Guy" for the rest of freshman year. Not the awkward kid who brought salad to a rager. Not the guy who destroyed his phone. Spinach Guy—the legend whose phone survived the cooler massacre thanks to leafy greens and a purple-haired stranger who became my girlfriend exactly two weeks later.

The spinach? We never did eat it.
