The Spinach Prophecy
Maya's cousin Jasmine's pool party was supposed to be chill, but Maya's anxiety was running a marathon in her chest. She'd been crushing on Jasmine's older brother, Devin, since freshman year, and today she'd finally work up the nerve to actually talk to him.
The problem? She'd spent the morning forcing down a green smoothie packed with spinach because her mom swore it'd make her skin glow. Spoiler alert: it didn't. It just made her burp faintly of vegetables all morning.
"Hey! You made it!" Jasmine waved from the pool, her waterproof phone case catching sunlight. "Come in!"
But first, Maya had to survive the patio. Where Devin sat. With his friends. Playing Truth or Dare.
"Yo, Maya!" Devin flashed that smile that made her knees go weak. "Wanna play?"
She sat cross-legged on the outdoor sofa, trying to look casual. The game was harmless until someone's aunt appeared out of nowhere—Literal Aunt Gail, who'd apparently studied palm reading in the seventies and took it VERY seriously.
"Let me see your hand, dear," Gail insisted, grabbing Maya's palm before she could protest. "Oh, interesting... very interesting."
The entire party went silent. Even the people in the pool stopped splashing.
"You're going to embarrass yourself today," Gail announced dramatically. "But it'll lead to something good. Something... authentic."
Everyone stared. Maya's face burned. Thanks, Aunt Gail. Thanks a lot.
Then someone shrieked. "OH MY GOD, MAYA!"
Her reflection in the sliding glass door said it all: a giant, obvious piece of spinach wedged between her front teeth. She'd been smiling at Devin for twenty minutes with salad in her smile.
But Devin didn't laugh. Not mean-laugh, anyway.
"Yo, happens to everyone," he said, handing her a napkin. "Last week I gave a presentation with coffee all over my chin. Whole class knew."
His friends nodded. "Bro, that was HILARIOUS," someone added. "But also, relatable."
And just like that, Maya wasn't the awkward new girl anymore. She was just... one of them. Someone who'd had a spinach moment. Someone real.
Later, floating in the pool under twinkling lights, Devin swam over. "So, Aunt Gail's predictions... she's actually weirdly accurate. Last year she told my cousin he'd find his true love at a gas station, and now they've been dating for eight months."
"Really?"
"Really." He grinned. "So if she says your spinach moment leads to something authentic..." He trailed off, but his eyes stayed on hers. "Maybe you want to get breakfast tomorrow? Somewhere with no green smoothies?"
