The Spinach Incident That Broke Me

I fixed my dad cap for the third time, tilting the brim just right. This hat was my whole personality this semester—vintage wash, slightly bent brim, the kind of "I'm not trying too hard" effort that took actual effort.

My phone vibrated with a low buzz. Jordan had finally texted back. I'd been staring at our lunch conversation, analyzing every emoji, every punctuation mark like my life depended on it. Now my heart raced as I reached for my iPhone, fingers slightly greasy from the cafeteria's questionable pizza.

Across the room, Jordan caught my eye and smiled. I felt my face heat up. Was this it? The moment? I grabbed my tray, trying to look casual, trying to move with the kind of effortless grace I definitely did not possess.

"Hey," I said, sliding into the seat across from Jordan. My voice squeaked. Fantastic.

"Hey yourself." Jordan pushed aside their phone. "You gonna eat that spinach?"

I froze. My salad. The spinach I'd absentmindedly piled onto my plate, then apparently into my mouth, then—oh no.

My tongue darted to my teeth. Green. Definitely green.

I think I actually died right there. The humiliation washed over me like a physical wave. My hat, my carefully curated aesthetic, my whole vibe—ruined by a leafy green vegetable.

Jordan started laughing. Not mean laughing, but actual laugh-until-you-can't-breathe laughing. "Dude, you've had spinach in your teeth for like five minutes. I've been trying to figure out how to tell you without being awkward."

I groaned, covering my face with both hands. "Kill me now."

"It's fine, it's fine." Jordan was still grinning. "Honestly? It's kind of adorable."

I peeked through my fingers. Jordan's phone was gone, shoved in their backpack. No pictures. No story. Just... this moment. Awkward, weird, somehow okay.

"Here." Jordan slid me a napkin. "Fix it. Then tell me where you got that hat, because I need one."

I wiped my teeth, still burning with embarrassment, but something else was there too. Relief. Maybe even the start of something real.

The spinach was gone. The hat stayed. And for the first time all semester, I felt like I could breathe.
