The Spinach Incident

Maya stared at her iPhone screen, thumb hovering over the post button. The photo showed her new haircut — a choppy bob she'd impulsively gotten yesterday after watching too many TikTok transformations. Zero likes yet. Not that she'd posted it.

"You going to just stare at it all morning?" Her little brother Leo appeared in the doorway, already in his padel gear. "Mom says you're coming to watch my tournament."

"Ugh, fine." Maya shoved the phone in her pocket and caught her reflection in the hallway mirror. The hair was... a lot. Too short, too grown-up, too everything. She'd wanted a fresh start at Northwood High, but maybe she'd just made herself look like she was trying too hard.

The padel courts were packed. Maya found a spot near the glass wall, scrolling through Instagram while Leo warmed up. Everyone else seemed so effortless — girls with perfect messy waves, guys with hair that fell exactly right.

Then she saw him: Liam from her history class, laughing with friends near the courtside café. He had the kind of hair that looked like he'd just rolled out of bed but somehow made it work. Maya had spent half the semester staring at the back of his head.

"Watch THIS!" Leo shouted, smashing the ball toward the glass. It ricocheted off a post and sailed directly into the café area — right into Liam's spinach and feta wrap.

Green. Everywhere.

Liam stood there, spinach leaves decorating his shirt like a tragic salad confetti. His friends were losing it. Maya wanted to melt through the concrete floor.

"Oh my god, LEO!" She rushed over, already pulling napkins from the dispenser. "I am so sorry."

Liam wiped spinach from his chin. For a second, Maya thought he'd be pissed. Instead, he started laughing. "Dude, your brother has aim."

He looked at Maya — really looked at her — and his eyes flickered to her new haircut. "Hey, I like what you did with your hair. It's brave."

Maya felt something unclench in her chest. "Thanks. I'm still getting used to it."

"It works." Liam grinned, spinach somehow still in his teeth but not even caring. "You should come play padel with us sometime. We need someone who can actually hit the ball."

Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket. She ignored it.

"Yeah," she said, surprising herself with how much she meant it. "I'd like that."
