The Spinach Incident

Maya's palms were sweating so much she could practically water plants with them. She stood in front of Valley High's ancient stone sphinx—a weird statue someone donated in the 90s—waiting for Jake to notice her.

"Hey Maya!" Jake called, walking over with his baseball cap backwards. "Want to hang at the food court?"

Her stomach did that thing where it felt like it was bench-pressing her heart. "Sure!"

Smooth. She was totally nailing this casual thing.

They sat across from each other at the food court, Jake's cleat-covered feet tapping some invisible rhythm. He was talking about varsity baseball tryouts, something about being the starting pitcher, but Maya was mostly just staring at how his eyelashes cast shadows on his cheeks.

"So," Jake said, leaning in. "I've been wanting to ask you something."

This was it. The moment. Maya straightened, ready.

"Yeah?" she managed, proud that her voice only squeaked a little.

Jake's expression shifted. He looked confused, then concerned, then weirdly sympathetic. "Maya... you have..." He made a gesture toward his own teeth.

Her blood turned to ice. She excused herself to the bathroom and there it was: a massive, fluorescent piece of spinach wedged between her front teeth like a green middle finger to her social life. Probably from that spinach salad she'd confidently ordered because *healthy choices*, not because she was trying to impress anyone.

She spent seven minutes in the bathroom questioning every life choice that led to this moment. When she finally came out, Jake was still there.

"Better?" he asked, smiling.

"Yeah," she mumbled, wanting to die.

"Good." He grinned. "Because I was going to ask if you wanted to come to my baseball game Friday, but then I got distracted by the spinach situation and it seemed rude to continue."

Maya blinked. "Wait, really?"

"Really." He laughed. "Unless you're planning to bring more spinach. Then I might have to reconsider."

The sphinx seemed to be laughing at her as they walked away together, but Maya didn't care. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments turned out to be the ones that actually mattered.
