The Spinach Incident

Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, clutching his phone like a lifeline. The cable management at his house was better organized than his social life, and right now, both were a mess.

"You coming in or what?" Jenna called from the water, her hair wet and perfect. She was the kind of girl who looked good swimming - graceful, confident, everything Marcus wasn't.

A pyramid of red Solo cups towered near the snack table, and Marcus's stomach did that annoying thing it always did when Jenna looked at him. He'd spent twenty minutes fixing his hair, carefully positioning his hoodie to hide the spinach stain from lunch. Because obviously, the universe had decided today of all days, spinach would be his enemy.

"I'm good," Marcus managed, his voice cracking slightly. Smooth. "Just checking something."

"Checking what? Your cable bill?" Tyler yelled, doing a cannonball that splashed water everywhere. The popular kids laughed.

Marcus's face burned. He should just jump in. Literally. But then he'd have to take off his hoodie, revealing the green disaster on his shirt. Or he could leave, but that would be admitting defeat. He was trapped in social purgatory.

A fox darted through the bushes behind the pool fence - a sleek, orange blur that moved with total confidence. No awkward pauses, no spinach stains, no overthinking every single movement. Lucky fox.

"Marcus?" Jenna swam over to the edge, water droplets sliding down her arms. "You okay? You look like you're about to throw up."

He looked at her - really looked at her - and something in her expression made him realize she wasn't making fun of him. She was actually worried.

"Fine," he said, then made a split-second decision. "Just admiring the view."

"The view?" Jenna raised an eyebrow, then laughed. "You mean Tyler's attempt to do a handstand in the water?"

Marcus smiled. "Yeah. That's exactly what I meant."

He pulled his hoodie off, spinach stain and all. Maybe confidence wasn't about being perfect. Maybe it was about owning your disasters. And maybe, just maybe, Jenna thought spinach stains were kind of cute.

"Coming in?" she asked again.

"Yeah," Marcus said. "Yeah, I am."
