The Spinach Incident
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, olive-green chunks stuck between her front teeth like tiny mossy boulders. Spinach. Of all days to eat that salad at lunch, it had to be today—photo day for the school paper.
'Lemme see,' her best friend Jordan insisted, grabbing her iPhone and swiping through TikToks like her life depended on it. 'Wait, is that why Tyler laughed at you in third period?'
Maya groaned. 'I'm literally gonna die. This is it. This is my villain origin story.'
'You're being dramatic,' Jordan said, though her eyes betrayed genuine sympathy. 'Just wash it out.'
But the damage was done. Maya had spent the entire period smiling confidently at Tyler—the cute junior who'd finally noticed her—while looking like a zombie who'd snacked on a salad bar. The social humiliation was complete. Freshman year was ruined.
Jordan set down her iPhone and sighed. 'You know what? We're gonna pivot. This is content now. We're gonna own it.'
'How?' Maya asked, still flossing aggressively.
'We'll call it The Spinach Chronicles. Everyone's got embarrassing stories. Tyler's probably done worse.'
Maya paused. Actually, Tyler had worn mismatched shoes to homecoming last year. And her other friend Amir once tripped over his own feet while trying to look cool in front of his crush and face-planted into a vending machine.
'Maybe you're right,' Maya said slowly. 'I mean, it's just spinach. Not world peace.'
'Exactly,' Jordan grinned, already typing something on her iPhone. 'Besides, real ones know confidence isn't about being perfect. It's about surviving yourself with style.'
Maya finally got the last piece out and smiled at her reflection—this time, actually clean. 'You know what? Spinach or not, I'm still that girl.'
'Period,' Jordan agreed. 'Now let's go get boba before next bell. We've earned it.'
Maya grabbed her backpack and followed her friend into the hallway, still cringing a little but mostly just laughing. Because honestly? High school was weird enough without taking yourself too seriously.
