The Spinach Incident

The social pyramid at Northwood High was simple: jocks at the top, then the popular kids, then everyone else desperately trying not to fall into the loser zone. I was firmly in the "everyone else" category, until the day my life became a literal comedy.

"Dude, you got spinach in your teeth," Marcus whispered, gesturing at his own front teeth.

I froze. I'd been talking to Maya—the Maya Rodriguez, junior goddess and padel team captain—for five minutes. Five minutes with green gunk in my teeth like some kind of rookie mistake.

"Why didn't you say something earlier?!" I hissed, rushing to the bathroom.

"I thought it was part of your vibe," Marcus shrugged. "You know, the whole 'I'm so confident I don't care what people think' thing."

Some vibe. More like "I'm so oblivious I don't realize I'm sabotaging my own life."

That afternoon, I sat alone at the baseball field, watching practice. Even the benchwarmers looked cooler than me. That's when Coach Miller approached.

"You any good with a bat?" he asked, like I hadn't just spent the entire season avoiding eye contact with anything athletic.

"I... I can try?"

First swing: strike. Second: miss so spectacular I almost fell over. The team snickered. I wanted to disappear into the dugout.

"Hey," Maya's voice cut through my humiliation. She stood by the fence, wearing her padel team jacket. "Your form's terrible."

"Thanks for the update."

"But," she continued, "you've got power. Want me to help?"

She spent the next hour teaching me how to actually hit a baseball. The spinach incident? She laughed about it. "Honestly, it made you seem human. The other guys try too hard."

We started hanging out after practice. Me, the nobody, and Maya, who was basically social royalty. The pyramid didn't matter anymore.

"You know what's funny?" she said one day, spinning a padel racquet. "Everyone thinks the pyramid is about being at the top. But it's really about finding your own level."

"Deep," I teased. "Did you read that on a fortune cookie?"

"Shut up," she laughed. "But seriously—spinach teeth and all, you're cooler than half the people I know."

Maybe the pyramid wasn't about climbing up. Maybe it was about finding who'd climb with you.
