The Spinach Incident
Maya stood at the edge of the cafeteria, clutching her tray like a shield. The social pyramid was as clear as ever: cheerleaders at the top, then athletes, then the regular kids, and somewhere near the bottom, people like her who preferred books to parties. Today, she'd accidentally sat at the wrong table—the one where Jackson, the guy she'd been crushing on since September, sat with his friends.
She'd managed to survive lunch by mostly staring at her food, which consisted of, unfortunately, a massive portion of creamed spinach that looked like something that had already been eaten.
"Hey, you got something..." Jackson pointed at his own teeth, grimacing.
Maya's stomach dropped. She'd been walking around with spinach in her teeth for who knows how long. The humiliation burned through her like lightning, hot and sudden and complete. She could practically feel her social life flash before her eyes.
"Thanks," she mumbled, grabbing her bag and fleeing to the bathroom.
Locked in a stall, she pulled out her phone. Three new notifications from her best group chat: DETENTION SQUAD. Tina: "Did you see Jackson's story?" Ren: "OMG he posted about YOU"
Her hands shaking, Maya opened Instagram. There it was—a photo of her spinach-filled smile with the caption: "When the cafeteria lady gives you extra creamed spinach 😅💚"
But he wasn't making fun of her. The comments were all people sharing their most embarrassing lunch moments. Someone had added a green heart. Jackson had posted it because it was relatable, not to roast her.
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. The spinach was gone, but her smile remained. Maybe the social pyramid wasn't as rigid as she thought. Maybe some people didn't care about climbing it at all.
She walked back to the cafeteria, sat down across from Jackson, and asked, "So, what's the story behind that spinach picture?"
He grinned. "Figured if we're all going to have embarrassing moments, we might as well own them."
Lightning struck again—but this time, it didn't burn. It illuminated.
