The Spinach Incident
The country club pool shimmered like Instagram gold, and I stood at the edge in my two-months-old bikini, feeling exactly like the fraud I was. This wasn't my world—these were the kids whose parents owned things, not rented them. But here I was, dragged along by Chloe, who'd decided we were climbing the social pyramid this summer, one pool party at a time.
"You coming in or what?" called Tyler, the guy whose smile made my stomach do that annoying fluttery thing.
I was mentally rehearsing my cool-girl response when my disaster of a cat, Miso—who I'd accidentally left in the backyard—decided to stage a prison break. Through the wrought-iron fence, I watched in horror as my cat bolted toward the pool area, clearly possessed by some demonic need to humiliate me in front of everyone.
"MISO, NO!" I shrieked, abandoning all dignity as I sprinted after him.
The chase ended with Miso perched dramatically on a table, right next to—because the universe has a terrible sense of humor—the chip dip. And because earlier I'd been stress-eating my mom's health kick salad, there was definitely spinach stuck in my teeth.
The entire pool party went silent. Then Tyler started laughing. Not mean laughing—the genuine kind, doubled over, can't-breathe laughing.
"Your cat just... made a run for the chips," he managed between laughs. "That's honestly iconic."
I glanced at my reflection in the sliding glass door. Spinach in my teeth. Hair everywhere. Chasing a cat in a two-piece.
But then something weird happened. Other people started laughing too. Not at me—with me. By the end of the afternoon, I wasn't the weird girl who crashed the party. I was the girl with the legendary cat, the one who'd given them the best meme content of the summer.
That night, Facetime with Chloe, I realized something: climbing the pyramid isn't about fitting into someone else's mold. It's about finding the people who think your chaos is charming.
Also: always check your teeth before talking to your crush. That part's non-negotiable.
