The Spinach Incident

Maya's older brother Jay had left for college three months ago, leaving behind his room, his oversized hoodies, and his ancient gaming setup. Maya had been eyeing that setup for weeks — specifically the HDMI cable that kept disappearing from their living room TV whenever she tried to watch Netflix.

"You're not actually gonna eat that, are you?"

Maya looked up from her lunch tray. Leo, her friend since kindergarten and the only person who knew about her secret Minecraft addiction, was staring at her with exaggerated horror.

"It's spinach, Leo. Not poison."

"It looks like something that washed up on shore," he said, then leaned in closer. "Anyway, you coming to Kai's party tonight? Everyone's gonna be there."

Maya's stomach did that familiar flip-flop thing — part excitement, part terror. She'd been trying to break out of her shell lately, put herself out there more. Her therapist called it 'expanding her comfort zone.' Maya called it 'emotionally exhausting.'

"Maybe," she said, pushing spinach around with her fork. "What's the vibe?"

"Chill. His parents are out of town. Like, actually out of town, not the 'they're in their room' kind of out of town."

Maya's dog, Buster, chose that exact moment to escape from wherever he'd been hiding and make a break for her lunch. A chaotic blur of golden fur and desperate energy, he vaulted onto the bench, sending Maya's tray flying. Spinach scattered everywhere like some kind of tragic salad confetti.

"BUSTER!" Maya shouted as the cafeteria erupted in laughter. Her face burned hot. Of course this would happen. Of course.

But then Leo was laughing too, and somehow that made it okay. He helped her clean up the mess, and when Buster finally settled down under the table, looking innocent as ever, Maya caught her reflection in the cafeteria window — hair messy, clothes spinach-dappled, grinning despite herself.

"You know," Leo said, examining a particularly large spinach leaf stuck to her sleeve, "leafy greens are technically a superfood. Full of vitamins and stuff. You're basically radiating health right now."

Maya rolled her eyes. "You're never gonna let me live this down, are you?"

"Nope." Leo grinned. "But I will help you find something actually wearable to wear tonight. And I'll bring snacks that aren't green."

Later that night, as Maya stood in Kai's crowded living room, music thumping through her chest, she spotted Leo across the room. He was already talking to someone new, effortlessly cool in that way she could never pull off. But then he caught her eye and gave her a small thumbs-up.

Maya took a breath and walked toward him. She could do this. She could be brave. She could make new friends, even if she had to bring spinach-shaming trauma with her as a conversation starter.

Besides, she thought, smiling to herself. At least she was getting her vitamins.
