The Spinach Incident
Maya's hair had a mind of its own. It was curly, frizzy, and completely unmanageable—kind of like her sophomore year. Standing in front of her bathroom mirror, she attacked it with a flat iron while her phone buzzed with texts from the group chat.
"u coming to jason's party?" "everyone's gonna be there" "don't be a loser Maya"
She groaned. Jason's party meant the social pyramid would be on full display. Seniors at the top, juniors in the middle, and everyone else trying not to fall off the bottom. Maya usually hovered somewhere around the middle—but tonight, she wanted to climb.
Her mom appeared in the doorway, holding a pot. "Eat your spinach before you go. It'll make you strong."
"Mom, I'm fifteen, not five," Maya said, though she grabbed a handful anyway and shoved it in her mouth.
"That's my girl. And sweetie? Don't let anyone treat you like you're less than you are."
Maya nodded, chewing thoughtfully.
At the party, the air smelled like cheap body spray and desperation. She spotted Jenna—aka 'the fox'—holding court in the kitchen. Jenna was gorgeous, clever, and absolutely ruthless. Maya had watched her dismantle people's confidence with a single smile.
"Hey, Maya!" Jason waved from across the room. His smile was bright, his movements loose. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.
She headed over, heart pounding. They talked for twenty minutes. He laughed at her jokes. He actually seemed interested in what she had to say about their history project.
Then Jenna appeared, sliding next to Jason like she'd been there the whole time. "So, Maya," she said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness, "heard you told people Jason was failing algebra."
What? No. She'd never—
"That's such bull," Jason said, frowning at Maya.
"I didn't say anything," Maya protested, but her voice came out weak.
"Whatever." Jenna flipped her hair. "Just saying, that's pretty messed up."
Jason walked away. Maya's eyes burned. This was why she hated parties. Why she hated—
She caught her reflection in a mirror. Green stuff. Stuck in her teeth. SPINACH.
Oh my god.
Jenna hadn't been lying about something Maya said—she'd been creating a diversion. Making Maya look crazy while everyone stared at her, waiting for the real show.
Maya marched to the bathroom, cleaned her teeth, and stared at herself. The curly hair. The spinach smile. The absolute mess of it all.
Then she walked back out. Found Jason.
"Jenna lied," she said, her voice steady. "She played you. And I had spinach in my teeth, which is why she started the whole thing. To distract everyone."
Jason blinked. Then he really looked at her. "Wait, seriously?"
"Check your phone. I bet Jenna's texted you five times while we've been talking."
He checked. His eyes widened.
Maya shrugged. "Anyway, I'm going home. My mom made me eat spinach, so clearly my night peaked at dinner."
Jason laughed—genuinely this time. "You're cool, Maya. Want to get boba tomorrow?"
She smiled, spinach-free and done caring about the pyramid. "Maybe. Text me."
Outside, the air was cool and her hair was starting to frizz again. Some nights, that was enough.
