The Spinach Incident

spinachhairfriend

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in the now-green strands of what used to be perfectly highlighted blonde hair. The DIY dye kit said "ocean breeze," not "pond scum." Her phone buzzed.

"My house. Twenty minutes. Bring emergency supplies," she texted Jordan.

Jordan arrived with a plastic bag from CVS and their usual chaotic energy. "Dude, what happened? You look like a mermaid who gave up."

"The box lied to me, Jordan. It lied."

"Okay, okay. We fix this." But while Jordan searched up hair color removal tutorials, Maya's stomach growled. She'd been too stressed to eat all day.

"You want the rest of my smoothie?" Jordan offered, gesturing to a cup on the counter. "It's actually good this time."

Maya took a grateful sip. "Wait, what's in this?"

"Spinach, banana, mango—"

Maya's eyes widened. She looked at her green hair, then at the green smoothie, then back at her hair. The absurdity hit her like a truck. She started laughing. Really laughing.

"What?" Jordan asked, confused.

"I'm literally spinach inside and out now. This is my life."

Jordan cracked up too. Soon they were both wheezing, Maya wiping tears from her eyes, hair disaster suddenly feeling like not that big of a deal.

"You know what?" Maya said, examining her reflection again. "Green hair fits my vibe. I'm leaning into it."

"You're definitely gonna get noticed at Emma's party tonight," Jordan said. "And for once, not because you're overthinking everything."

Maya grinned. Maybe green hair was exactly what she needed. And maybe, just maybe, having a friend who brought both hair dye remover and spinach smoothies was everything.

"Okay," she said, grabbing her jacket. "Let's go."

"Wait, you're not gonna fix it?"

"Nope. I'm gonna be the mysterious girl with the green hair who doesn't care what anyone thinks."

Jordan smirked. "Bold move, Williams. Bold move."

Maya's phone buzzed again—Emma, checking if they were still coming. She typed back with her green hair and her spinach breath and her best friend at her side.

"On our way."
