The Spinach Incident

Maya's hair was refusing to cooperate. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame the frizz, but it had other plans. Naturally, today of all days—the day she was finally hanging out with Ty after school—her hair looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket.

"You look fine," her little brother scoffed from the doorway. "Total drama queen over here."

"Get out, Leo!" Maya threw a hairbrush at him. He dodged, laughing.

Her phone buzzed. Ty: heading over, be there in 10

Panic mode: ACTIVATED.

They were supposed to watch a movie, but her parents' old cable box had been acting up all week. Why hadn't she mentioned streaming instead? Now she'd look technologically challenged. Great.

Maya sprinted to the kitchen. Her mom had made spinach artichoke dip as a "sophisticated snack" for Maya's "special guest." Maya loved her mom, but why did she have to be so extra?

The doorbell rang.

Maya's cat, Mochi, decided THIS was the moment to make a break for freedom. As Maya opened the front door, Mochi shot between her legs and bolted down the hallway.

"Mochi! NO!" Maya shouted.

Ty stood on the porch, looking unfairly cute in his hoodie. "Was that... a cat?"

"Yeah, my cat's trying to escape. Come in, I'll—"

"Maya!" Her mom appeared from the kitchen. "I made spinach dip! Tell your friend!"

Maya wanted to evaporate.

"Spinach dip?" Ty grinned. "Actually, that sounds awesome."

They ended up on the couch, watching Netflix on her laptop because the cable was indeed broken. Mochi returned and sprawled across Ty's lap like she owned him. The spinach dip was surprisingly good.

"Your hair looks nice," Ty said suddenly.

Maya laughed. "You're literally looking at a disaster."

"Nah." He took a scoop of dip. "I like it. It's... real."

Her brother's voice carried from the kitchen: "That's such BULL, everyone knows Maya spent—"

"Leo, I WILL end you!" Maya yelled.

Ty laughed, and Maya thought maybe—just maybe—imperfect was perfect enough.
