The Spinach Incident

Maya's friendship with Chloe had been feeling weird lately. Like, weird-weird. Ever since Chloe started hanging with the popular crowd at Northwood High, Maya had been vibing with the awkward feeling of being left behind.

"You coming to Jake's party?" Chloe asked, barely looking up from her phone as they sat together at lunch. Maya poked at her cafeteria tray, specifically at the mound of overcooked spinach that looked like something that died in a swamp.

"Dunno," Maya muttered. "My mom's making me walk Buster again."

Buster was their family's golden retriever, who had zero chill and would definitely embarrass her somehow if she brought him anywhere. But Jake's party was where the cool kids would be. Where Chloe would be.

"Just come, okay?" Chloe said, finally meeting her eyes. "It's whatever."

Maya agreed, mostly because the alternative was another Friday night rewatching The Office for the tenth time with her parents.

But first: the dog walking duty from hell.

Buster lived for chaos. As Maya walked him through the neighborhood, he spotted an orange traffic cone and decided it was his mortal enemy. He lunged, Maya tripped, and somehow—don't ask her how physics worked here—she ended up with spinach from her lunch (she'd somehow gotten some on her shirt earlier, because fate hated her) smeared across her cheek AND dog hair everywhere.

She showed up to Jake's looking like she'd lost a fight with a salad and a golden retriever.

Chloe found her in the bathroom, where Maya was frantically trying to wash spinach out of her favorite hoodie.

"You look like you survived a natural disaster," Chloe said, but she was smiling. Actually smiling, not her fake Instagram smile.

"Your dog tried to murder a traffic cone," Maya said, wiping her face. "And I have spinach in places spinach should never be."

Chloe laughed—a real laugh, the kind Maya hadn't heard in months. "That's actually iconic. You know what? Forget those people out there. This is way better."

They spent the rest of the party hiding in the bathroom, making fun of everyone's terrible outfits and sharing Chloe's emergency stash of orange soda she'd brought. It wasn't the party Maya expected, but as she caught Chloe's eye and they both cracked up about Buster's vendetta against traffic cones, she figured maybe their friendship wasn't doomed after all.

Sometimes the worst disasters turn into the best stories. Even if they involve spinach.
