The Spinach Incident

runningbullwaterspinach

Maya's first day at Ridge Creek High started with a bull—literally. The school mascot, a fiberglass bull named Buster, stood guard at the entrance, painted in intimidating crimson and gold. She adjusted her backpack, heart running a marathon against her ribs.

'You must be the new girl,' someone called. A guy with messy brown hair and a basketball jersey leaned against Buster. 'I'm Tyler. Welcome to the zoo.'

Maya's face heated up. 'Thanks. I'm Maya.'

'That's Liam,' Tyler pointed at another guy sprinting across the quad. 'He's always running somewhere. Probably from something.'

Liam skidded to a halt, chest heaving. 'Water fountain's broken again. Had to run to the gym.'

At lunch, Maya's social anxiety kicked into overdrive. She grabbed a tray, eyes scanning the cafeteria like it was a minefield. The spinach looked like it had survived a nuclear winter. She plopped some onto her plate anyway, trying to look casual.

'Is that... spinach?' Tyler appeared beside her, grimacing. 'Brave choice.'

'It's fine,' Maya lied, though her stomach disagreed.

The next moment changed everything. Liam came barreling through the lunch line, waving something above his head. 'Guess who found Coach's phone?!'

He tripped. The phone flew. Maya lunged to catch it—but her tray went flying too. Spinach cascaded everywhere. On her shirt. On Tyler's jersey. On the floor.

The cafeteria went silent.

Then Tyler started laughing. Not mean laughing—genuine, bent-over laughing. Liam joined in, and soon Maya was too, despite her spinach-covered embarrassment.

'Dude,' Liam wheezed. 'You just started a food fight with yourself.'

'That's one way to make an entrance,' Tyler agreed, grinning. 'You're alright, Maya.'

By the end of the day, Maya had learned two things: first impressions rarely go as planned, and sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. Plus, Tyler had snuck her a bottle of water after the spinach disaster, which basically made them best friends.

'Same time tomorrow?' Tyler asked at the lockers.

'Only if there's no spinach involved,' Maya shot back.

'No promises,' Liam called from down the hall, already running toward practice.

Maya smiled. Maybe Ridge Creek High wouldn't be so bad after all.
