The Spinach Incident

Maya's hair was supposed to be perfect for junior prom. Instead, she looked like she'd gone three rounds with a leaf blower. The expensive styling cream her mom swore by? Yeah, that turned her dark curls into something resembling a poodle that hadn't seen a brush in weeks.

"You look fine," her best friend Chloe said, though her expression said otherwise. They were setting up for the pre-prom stream at Maya's house—because apparently, Gen Z couldn't just attend prom anymore, they had to document every awkward moment for their followers. Chloe was adjusting the lighting while Maya's little brother Aiden messed with the HDMI cable connecting everything to the living room TV.

Then Maya's golden retriever, Buster, decided this was the perfect time to zoom through the room like a furry tornado. He knocked over Aiden's soda—ice water everywhere—and sent the cable flying. The stream went black. Chloe's face went pale. Maya's carefully styled hair frizzed even more in the humidity from the spilled water.

But the real disaster? Maya caught her reflection in the darkened TV screen. A massive piece of spinach from her earlier smoothie was wedged between her front teeth, visible from space. She'd been talking to everyone all day like that.

"Oh my god," Maya whispered.

"I was wondering why you were smiling like that," Aiden said.

Maya wanted to evaporate. This was it. Her social life, over. She'd be known as Spinach Girl forever. Prom would arrive and she'd be crying in the bathroom while some kid live-tweeted her humiliation.

Then Chloe started laughing. Not mean laughing—the ugly, snort-laugh that happened when things were so bad they became good. "Dude, we can still fix this. And the cable? We'll just go live from your phone. No one needs to know about the spinach incident except us."

Aiden fetched floss. Buster looked guilty. Maya scrubbed her teeth while Chloe smoothed her hair. And somehow, sitting there with wet socks and a dog that smelled like regret, Maya realized something: perfect moments didn't exist. The messy ones? Those became the stories you told later.

"Next time," Chloe said, "maybe skip the green smoothies before picture time."

"Next time," Maya agreed, "I'm letting Buster bite the cable."

They went to prom with slightly smudged makeup and zero apologies. The photos turned out terrible. Maya kept every single one.
